15 Oct 2025
Location:
Society of Antiquaries of London, Burlington House, Piccadilly, London W1J 0BE
The Taverns of London in the late 18th century were not pub or bars, they were fine dining establishments. Roach’s London Pocket Pilot, 1796, lists the Globe in Fleet Street, as one of the five best eating establishments in London. Its cook, Richard Briggs, published a cookery book containing over 700 pages of recipes.
This year's Mithras Lecture is given by Freeman of the Company Marc Meltonville, a renowned food and drink historian, who looks at the man, the cook and the Taverns of London. The evening concludes with a drinks reception with light nibbles.
