About the Livery

Livery Companies are historic trade associations in the City of London originally established as medieval guilds to regulate their respective crafts and uphold quality standards among members.

Over time, their roles evolved from professional regulation to charitable, educational and ceremonial functions. Today there are 113 Livery Companies, ranging from ancient groups like the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, to modern ones representing newer professions such as Information Technologists.

While they no longer govern trade in the traditional sense, Livery Companies continue to support their industries, promote philanthropy and play a role in the governance of the City of London. In 2024 the combined Charitable giving by the Livery Companies was £81m, with £33.9m of that supporting education and young people.
